In order to help our dogs learn there are a few things that we as handlers need to keep in mind so we’re able to make sure that our training sessions remain successful and run smoother. The best way to hold your hands when training your dog is in a neutral position, for example having both of your hands by your side.
Tip 1: Keep your hand out of your treat pouch. If you do, your dog will be more focused on your hand in the pouch rather than on you.
Tip 2: The timing of the click is more important than how fast you’re able to deliver the treat. The click marks the behavior you like, the treat serves as reinforcement.
How to train with neutral position:
- Whether standing or sitting keep your hands at your side away from your treat pouch.
- Click your dog THEN reach into your treat pouch for a treat to feed them.
