Whiplash Turn in Doorway – Step 1

Dogs using the Wait Command

In order to help your dog learn how to do whiplash turn in the doorway, we first teach them about going back and forth through the doorway using other patterns they already know. This comfort level with the movement will make teaching the whiplash turn easier both for you and your dog.

How to Teach:

  1. To teach your dog the value of going back and forth in the doorway we use the ping pong game with you standing in the threshold and your dog moving back and forth to the areas on either side of the doorway.
  2. Find a threshold that is easy for your dog to move back and forth in without large distractions, for example one inside your house if possible.
    1. If you are using a door that goes outside we recommend putting your dog on a leash.
  3. Place a treat on one side of the doorway, when your dog looks at you, click, put a treat on the other side of the doorway.
  4. Repeat step 3 multiple times to establish the pattern in the doorway.
  5. Once your dog is consistently and comfortably moving back and forth through the doorway (threshold) then you can move on to Whiplash Turn in the Doorway Step 2.
